Caregivers, Nursing Home Ownership, will "the government" pay?

Clara Hatcher, 77, has been getting dialysis three mornings a week in Richmond for 12 years, leaning on her caregiver and nurse to make it work. Her story's part of a bigger one: Virginia's demand for home caregivers is outpacing the workforce, and even small things like unreliable bus routes are making it harder for caregivers to reach clients.

A few other things on my radar this week:

           2. After a Richmond-area nursing home changed ownership, staffing dropped and 911 calls jumped 70% — a good reminder that who owns a facility matters, not just how it looks on a tour.

          3. Gov. Spanberger signed a bill ordering a deep study into nursing home ownership and care practices statewide — no new rules yet, but it shows where attention is headed.

          4. Washington state becomes the first in the country to pay out public long-term care benefits starting July 1 ($36,500 lifetime max). Virginia has nothing similar — worth knowing if you've wondered whether "the government" will eventually step in.

Learn about LifeSpire's expansion at The Glebe in Daleville and how it reflects the growing demand for quality retirement and long-term care communities.

LifeSpire of Virginia has broken ground on a $25 million expansion at The Glebe continuing care retirement community in Daleville — just outside Roanoke — adding 22 new cottages designed specifically for aging in place. The project reflects surging demand: Roanoke County's senior population represents 28% of residents, with adjacent Botetourt County at 32%. The expansion is part of a broader LifeSpire strategy to tilt its portfolio toward independent living to attract residents earlier in their retirement journey.

          Why it matters:

Demand for quality senior living in the Roanoke Valley is outpacing supply — and it's being noticed at the investment level. For clients in this region, waitlists at premier communities are real and growing. Having LTC insurance in place before a health event doesn't just pay the bill — it expands the options significantly, including access to continuing care communities like The Glebe that require private-pay capacity.

The expansion responds to strong demand for private, campus-style living with access to a full continuum of care. Move-ins are expected in early 2027.

The Virginia Assisted Living Association has introduced the Assisted Living Career Playbook, a guide highlighting employment positions available within Virginia's assisted living communities, featuring local workforce development resources and designed for anyone from high schoolers to experienced professionals. VALA is also seeking nominations for its Diamond Awards, recognizing outstanding administrators, caregivers, and support staff — with a deadline of May 15, 2026. Valainfo

Why it matters: Workforce is the number-one issue facing every care community in Virginia. Initiatives like this career playbook are small but meaningful steps toward building a sustainable pipeline of caregivers. For your clients, the quality of care their loved ones receive is directly tied to how well facilities can recruit and retain good people — something worth asking about when evaluating any community.
